What are the different types of bariatric bedside commodes ?
The term “bariatric” comes from the greek word “baros“ meaning heavy.
Bariatric commodes are simply commodes which are able to support heavier individuals, and the types of bariatric bedside commodes are exactly the same as standard bedside commodes, they are just a bit bigger and made of stronger materials –
- bariatric bedside commodes
- bariatric drop arm bedside commodes
- bariatric transport or rolling bedside commodes
- combination bariatric shower chair, transport chair and bedside commode
Typically, you will find that bariatric commodes also come in “wide“, “extra wide” and “tall” versions.
Often the term “heavy duty” is used in place of the term “bariatric“, but it simply means a stronger design for a greater weight.
Like all other bedside commodes, you will also find that some have hard plastic, padded, waterproof and folding versions available.
And that some models will mix the various types together – such as a “drop arm shower transport commode”.
Bariatric commodes come in a variety of different sizes to fit different users –
- seat height from the floor ranges from 17″ up to 28″
- seat widths range from 13″ up to 31″
- seat depths range from 14″ up to 23″
- widths between armrests range from 17 3/4″ up to 31 1/4″
- open front seats
In the article “Do Bedside Commodes Come In Different Sizes ?”, you will find information about all the different heights widths and seat shapes and sizes, and examples of each of the different types.
I have written a more extensive article in which I discuss the different types of bedside commode, which can be read here – “Bedside Commodes: How To Make The Right Choice ?”.
Static bariatric bedside commodes
Of the static bedside commodes the 3-in-1, or All-in-One bedside commodes offer bariatric models.
These models have multiple functions, somewhat indicated by these other names.
The 3 intended uses are –
- bedside commode
- as a raised toilet seat
- as a toilet safety frame when you remove the seat, pale and lid
The frames for the bariatric, and heavy duty frames are usually steel, double tubed aluminum, or special plastic PVC constructions.

Drop arm bedside commodes
Static drop arm commodes are distinguished from a static bedside commode by their armrests, which are not in a fixed position.
Their arms may swing up or down, or be removed.
The drop arms help with getting onto the commode from the side from a wheelchair or a bed, for example, where the user needs to gain access from the side.
Drop arms may also be found on all the other types of commode.
Drop arm commodes are designed for a number of functions –
- as a bedside commode
- as a toilet safety frame
- as a raised toilet seat over a conventional toilet

Transport or rolling bedside commodes
Transport, or rolling bedside commodes, are quite simply bedside commodes with wheels, which are extremely practical for frail elderly loved ones who sometimes may be too tired to walk, or who mobility issues restricting their movement.
Just as with the previous types, this type of commode has multiple uses –
- a transport chair
- a bedside commode
- a raised toilet seat over a toilet
The maximum weight capacity I found on a bariatric transport bedside commode was 750 lb. The static chairs go to double that weight.

Shower transport bedside commodes
These commodes have been specifically designed for wheeling into the shower, so be warned if you have a step or a rim to your shower they won’t work for that.
These commodes have multiple uses just like the other types –
- as a shower chair
- a transport chair
- a bedside commode
- a raised toilet seat over a toilet – but only certain types can do this, so do check if this is something that you need it for
The highest weight capacity I found for this type of commode was 750 lb.

Bariatric bedside commodes weight limits
I am starting my list of bariatric bedside commode weight limits with those at 400 lb, and going up to those with limits of 1500 lb.
I have divided the commodes by weight groups, and then into their broad categories.
I have tried my best to provide the manufacturers product numbers with the models of commode where I could find them – I tried to get them from the manufactures’ websites rather than retailers.
Unfortunately, not all the brands have websites, and do not manufacture the commodes themselves, which makes it a little hard to get that information, and so some manufacturer’s product numbers are not included here, for those reasons.
I have entered all of the names of the commodes with their product numbers into my browser window, and checked that they do bring up the correct models when you search.
