Gently used durable medical equipment which has been refurbished is a perfectly good option when you can’t afford new items, so long as it has been properly checked for safety and sanitized.
You don’t have to buy used medical equipment, though, lots of organizations will give, or lend, used medical equipment to those who cannot afford it.
Community loan closets will often lend to any member of the community who needs it for a short while.

I will be frequently be referring to “assistive technology devices” in this piece.
So, let’s start with a quick definition of the term – “assistive technology devices” are devices which enable an individual to accomplish a daily living task, that they could not otherwise accomplish without that device.
Assistive technology devices can be either high-tech or low-tech.
Durable medical equipment falls nicely under the umbrella of assistive technology device, so when I use the term assistive technology devices it includes home medical equipment and durable medical equipment.
Used medical equipment from Ability Tools, the State Assistive Technology Program
The State Assistive Technology Program in California is “ABILITY TOOLS”.
Their website is here – https://abilitytools.org/
Every state AT Program’s mission is to increase public access to “assistive technology devices”.
Ability Tools does this, in part, by contracting with a coalition of Reuse Centers, called the CATRC – The California Assistive Technology Reuse Coalition.
The CATRC website is here.
The members of the CATRC collect and refurbish used medical equipment for Ability Tools, and then help to re-distribute equipment to those in need.
ABILITY TOOLS with the CATRC, offer the possibility, to those who qualify, of –
- loans of new or used medical equipment in the short term for free
- loans of new or used medical equipment for longer periods of time for free
- loans of new or used medical equipment indefinitely for free
- being given new or used medical equipment for free
- buying used medical equipment at a very low cost, if you do not qualify for the loans
The Ability Tools AT Exchange
All the refurbished and sanitized medical equipment in the inventories of the CATRC coalition members is posted online at the Ablitlity Tools AT Exchange, where anyone, including the public, can see what is available.
This is the Assistive Technology Exchange website – http://abilitytools.org/services/at-exchange-transition.php
To see instructions on how to use the AT Exchange, you can refer to my article “Free Medical Equipment In California: How And Where To Get It”, where you will see a section on how to use the Ability Tools AT Exchange.

Goodwill stores selling used medical in the Sacramento
You won’t find used medical equipment at all Goodwill stores.
If the stores do sell used medical equipment, it is sold “as is”, and Goodwill gives no guarantee as to the condition of the equipment.
Goodwill stores also do not work on, sanitize, or repair used items before they are put on sale, so you do need to inspect what you are buying closely.

The Goodwill organization in the Sacramento area is Goodwill Sacramento Valley and Northern Nevada.
Goodwill has around 20 stores in Sacramento.
To find the stores nearest to you in Sacramento, use their locator tool here.
Salvation Army stores also sell used medical equipment in Sacramento
Just like Goodwill thrift stores, Salvation Army stores do not all sell used home medical equipment.
And again, if they do sell used medical equipment, it is sold “as is”, with no repair, or cleaning, of the items, and importantly with no guarantee for the condition of the items.
Do examine closely any used medical equipment that you buy from them.

Remember to be careful when buying used medical equipment from thrift stores, or online listings, as it comes without any guarantee for its condition, and you are buying these used items at your own risk.
By comparison, reuse centers selling used medical equipment, sanitize and refurbish the used medical equipment to make sure it is hygienic and safe.
If you are buying from a reuse center, you can ask them if they have refurbished the equipment, and if they offer any guarantee.
