Where To Donate Used Medical Equipment In New York State: The Complete Guide

by

If you or your loved one, no longer need some of your items of  home durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, bedside commodes, canes and even hospital beds, you can really help individuals in need on lower incomes by donating the equipment.

In New York State you can donate used medical equipment  to –

  • the New York Assistive Technology Program – TRAID centers
  • medical equipment reuse, refurbishing and recycling
  • New York Independent Living Centers
  • Goodwill stores
  • Salvation Army stores
  • Thrift Stores
  • Rotary Clubs
  • Lions Clubs
  • loan closets for durable medical equipment
  • Nursing Homes
  • Veterans’ Centers
  • Senior Centers
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars
  • American Legion
  • International Humanitarian organizations
  • on craigslist
  • on usedHME
  • on Freecycle
  • on Facebook

I have put together a comprehensive guide of all the organizations that I can find in New York State to which you can donate used medical equipment, complete with addresses, phone numbers and drop off information.

Where the information is available, I have listed the types of equipment donations which are preferred.

I would suggest using the links in the table of contents below to skip to the section you wish to use.

There are literally hundreds of different places you can donate to listed in this article.

The section and Thrift Stores and the section on Loan Closets have their own indexes to help you find a location near you more easily.

Assistive Technology Programs

Across the US, Assistive Technology Programs are implemented on a statewide basis to provide increased access to assistive technology equipment for individuals with disabilities, and for the elderly.

Most states have organized their programs with regional centers providing a number of services to the communities they serve.

The centers which run the AT programs will generally have –

  • demonstrations of different types of AT technologies and equipment
  • run training in the use of the equipment
  • have loan closets of AT equipment, which will include many items of durable medical equipment

The services may not be limited to those listed above, but should include them.

The New York Assistive Technology Program

The New York state Assistive Technology Program is called TRAID –

Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Program.

Website – https://www.justicecenter.ny.gov/traid-program

Unfortunately, TRAID no longer has an online equipment exchange where you can donate equipment on a person-to-person basis.

Your only option is to donate gently used durable medical equipment directly to TRAID at your regional TRAID center.

Below is a list of the TRAID Regional Centers and their contact information.

Medical equipment reuse, refurbishing and recycling programs and organizations in New York State

The following are organizations which accept donations of gently used durable medical equipment for “reuse”, and redistribute it to those in need in New York, either for free or at very low prices.

Some reuse centers will only take gently used equipment which does not require any fixing or refurbishing, and will then redistribute it for free to their community. In this sense, all of the TRAID Centers which I listed above are also reuse centers.

Independent Living Centers for the disabled will also take equipment and redistribute to the individuals in their care and into the community via their loan closets.

I have listed the Independent Living Centers of New York State in the section following Reuse Centers, and you can find all their information there.

Some “reuse” centers will charge low prices for their equipment because they are generally having to refurbish and to sanitize the items, and have to pay for this. These are generally nonprofit organizations.

An example of this would be Wonderful Wheelchairs, who have a staff of volunteers, but have to pay for the spare parts etc. for refurbishing the wheelchairs, walkers and scooters and so have to charge very low rates for the refurbished items.

TRAID Centers

As I explained in the last section on the New York Assistive Technology Program TRAID, you can donate equipment and it will be given to those in need and “reused”. The equipment in these cases that is donated will have to be in good condition.

To find a TRAID REGIONAL CENTER near, just refer back to the list above, or use this link to the list of regional centers on their website.

Donating used medical equipment to Goodwill Stores in New York State

Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey – Goodwill NYNJ

Goodwill NYNJ has 43 retail stores and donation center.

You can use the location tool, entering your zip code to find a donation center, on this page – https://locations.goodwillnynj.org/

Or, if you want to, just scroll down the long list below the locator tool which has all the store and donation centers, on the same page.

You can read about donating to Goodwill NYNJ here – https://www.goodwillnynj.org/donate-goods

Phone: 718 777 6320

Goodwill Western New York

Goodwill Western New York  accepts donations at 19 locations, and durable medical equipment is not on the list of items which are refused, except for hospital beds which they do not want.

The donations’ page on their website is here – https://www.goodwillwny.org/donate-stuff

To find a shop, or attended location, to donate to, go to the following page and click on one of the sites, and you will get the telephone number + address of the store – https://www.goodwillwny.org/locations

It is always a good idea to call first.

Phone: 716 854 3494

Goodwill Of The Finger Lakes

Goodwill Of The Finger Lakes serves Rochester and Syracuse and their adjacent areas

Durable medical equipment is not on the list of rejected items, so you should be good to go, but make sure your donations are in good condition.

The donations page for Rochester is on their website here – https://www.goodwillfingerlakes.org/stores/locations/region/rochester

I must say it is a little odd, as the website says you can donate to all stores, but then shows you a map with drop off locations and stores, so you will have to find what suits you, and give a call.

There are 9 drop-off sites, and 11 stores, all listed with phone numbers, so just give a call.

The donations page for Syracuse is here on their website  – https://www.goodwillfingerlakes.org/stores/locations/region/syracuse

There are 3 drop-off locations and 2 stores, they are each listed with their address and phone number, so again give them a call to make sure that what you have is something that they want – also they may not be taking certain items all the time due to the amount of storage space available to them.

Donating used medical equipment to the Salvation Army in New York State

The Salvation Army will accept donations of all items and equipment, including some home medical equipment, but only if it is in good condition.

To donate your gently used home medical equipment, you need to go to their website here – https://satruck.org/

That will take you to the page below-

Enter your zip code into the corresponding box for the service you require, and you will open a map with the locations and a list of addresses and contact links, as in the image below.

You can pick a site from the map or the list and then contact them to find out about dropping your donation off.

Donating used medical equipment to thrift stores in New York State

Many thrift stores will be happy to take donations of used medical equipment if it is in relatively good condition.

Don’t forget though, if you are looking to claim your donation as a tax deduction, then you will need to donate to a thrift store which is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, as you can only claim if you are donating to a nonprofit, or charitable, organization.

Below is a very long list of the thrift stores that I could find that accept donations of used medical equipment in New York State.

Just pick a town on the list below near you, and it will go directly to the thrift stores in that town

Albany

Habitat ReStore in the Capital District
70 Fuller Rd,
Albany, NY 12205

Donating used medical equipment to Senior Centers in New York State

Lots of senior centers will also be very grateful to receive donations of gently used durable medical equipment, either for use at the center, or to add to a loan closet, should they have one.

An example of senior centers which do accept equipment donations are the centers run by JASA – Jewish Association for Services for the Aged.

JASA has 22 senior centers across New York City to which you can donate, but due to COVID-19 you will need to go to their website and submit a form.

The main JASA Phone number: 212 273 5359

You can find the donation form page here on their websitehttps://jasa.org/in-kind-donations

Donate used medical equipment in New York State near me, online

The internet offers another method for donating your home medical equipment for free, and allows you to do it very close to home, using certain online platforms and apps.

Before looking at the different online platforms on which you can do this,  it is important to raise a few points about using online listings, and handing over your donations to the new user  –

1) It is best not to hand over the item  at your home, especially if you are caring for an elderly, vulnerable person there.

Good places to arrange the drop-off are coffee shops, malls, or somewhere else public and local – you don’t know if the person you are  giving the item to has other motives.

2) It is best to take another person with you when you hand over the item, especially if you are a woman.

3) When you create the listing, don’t use your main personal email, as  on some platforms, the email can easily get inundated with spam (Craigslist is notorious for this).

4) Scamming – when donating items such as used medical equipment, this should not be a problem, but be wary of people who ask for too much information.

With platforms like Nextdoor, OfferUp and Facebook, you can take a look at a user’s profile, and get some information about them, and how long they have been a member etc.

You can donate medical equipment on –

  • Craigslist.com
  • Freecycle.org
  • UsedHME.com
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Nextdoor.com
  • OfferUp and Letgo (now combined under OfferUp)

In the description of your listing –

  • be clear that you do not accept responsibility for any breakages, or accidents once the item has changed hands
  • the person has to accept your item “as is”
  • there is  no guarantee for the equipment you are donating

If the equipment is in very poor condition, it’s best to donate it to a re-use center.

Donate used medical equipment in New York State near me, on Craigslist

Craigslist is open to anyone who wants to list an item for sale, or for free, or buy and accept items.

You go to the website and create a listing for your used medical equipment.

Unlike the social media platforms, you do not have to be a member

Craigslist is available to use  on both mobile and desktop devices.

You can select the areas where your listing is shown, giving you a way to keep it local.

Remember to create and use a throwaway email for the listing, as Craigslist is an open listing, and you can get inundated with spam emails.

Craigslist has a garage or yard sales section, where you can check the photographs that are posted for the garage sales. You could always donate your equipment to someone having a garage sale near you.

You can find my illustrated guide on donating used home medical equipment on Craigslist.com here – “How To Donate Used Medical Equipment Near Me On Craigslist ? An Illustrated Guide”

Donate used medical equipment in New York State near me, on UsedHME.com

The website UsedHME.com is a place you can, buy, sell or donate used home medical equipment.

What makes this site unique, is that it is only for used home medical equipment, making it much easier for people to find items. You don’t have to waste time looking through listings which are totally unrelated to your personal search.

It is available to use on both mobile and desktop.

UsedHME shows your listing using your zip code, so that people in your own zip code will be shown your listing.

If you want to increase the size of the area showing your listing, you have an additional option of adding more zip codes.

The contact with the person who wishes to accept your donation is direct, they will be in touch with you using your contact details that you put with your listing.

There are no dealings involving the website.

Donate used medical equipment in New York State near me, on Freecycle.org

Freecycle.org is an organization dedicated to passing on items to new homes for free.

There is no app required, you just use the website tools for mobile and desktop.

The organization is basically a network of groups of members, all across the US and Europe, with members of the groups offering items for any of the other members of that group to accept.

You need to become a member of a group where you live, to offer your item, which is free and simple enough to do.

On the website, you can check the groups in your area, even if you are not a member, and see what people are offering and requesting.

You can join as many groups as you want, and you can join groups close to home to make sure you keep it local.

You can find my illustrated article on how to join and donate used home medical equipment near you on Freecycle.org, here – “How To Donate Used Medical Equipment Near Me on Freecycle.org ? A Very Quick Illustrated Guide”

Netxdoor has an app for mobile, and the website for desktop.

To use Nextdoor you need to become a member, which is free.

Nextdoor uses your address, to put you into the right neighborhood, matching you with all the other members living around you.

You can find my illustrated guide on how to donate used home medical equipment on Nextdoor.com, here –  “How To Donate Used Medical Equipment Near Me On Nextdoor ? An Illustrated Guide”

Donate used medical equipment in Texas near me, on OfferUp

OfferUp is a “mobile first” platform, with an app for mobile, and a website for desktop, dedicated to selling and buying used goods.

For mobile, just download the free app.

Organizations which may know where to donate used medical equipment near me in New York State

As well as using online selling groups to donate used medical equipment, try some of the following agencies and administrations in your neighborhood –

  • Your local Area Agency on Aging
  • Social services office
  • Lions Clubs
  • Rotary Clubs
  • Local church communities
  • Local town hall or chamber of commerce
  • Local hospitals
  • Emergency rooms
  • Private clinics
  • Faith based charities

Area Agencies on Aging

Area Agencies on Aging are agencies are appointed in each state, to provide public services and support, for the elderly adults their carers.

Agencies will be aware of the non-profits and community groups in their area, who are working with the elderly.

If you want to find out about groups working with the elderly, contact your Area Agency on Aging.

Use the Area Agencies on Aging locator tool here on the government website, to find your local agency – https://eldercare.acl.gov/Public/About/Aging_Network/AAA.aspx

Lions Clubs

The Lions run many Charity programs, and will know a lot about different groups accepting donations in their area, and any of their clubs running loan closets.

You can use their locator tool to find a club near you .

I have an illustrated guide explaining how to very quickly find a Lions Club near you, which you can read here.

Rotary Clubs

Just like the Lions, the Rotary organization does a huge amount of charity work.

Use their locator tool to find a club near to you, and if the club knows who is taking donations of used medical equipment.

I have an illustrated guide on how to very quickly locate a Rotary Club near you, that you can read here.

Catholic Charities

The Catholic Charities run many programs to help underprivileged groups

The charities are involved in food programs, homelessness programs and much more,  and are in a position to know where there are people who can benefit from donations of equipment.

To find them in your part of New York, look up “Catholic Charities New York State” in your preferred web browser, and you will see a website for your area, with all the necessary contact information.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The Society of  St. Vincent de Paul, like the Catholic Charities, has branches all over the US, and also does a huge amount of charitable work.

The organization runs many thrift stores, but as well as selling equipment to raise money for their charitable work, they also give used medical equipment away to those who cannot afford it.

Just look them up on the web – “Society of St. Vincent de Paul + your location” – and you will get the nearest groups with their contact details.

If they don’t need your equipment, they may know who does.

Tax deductions on donations

If you are donating your used medical equipment to a registered charity, keep the receipt if you are hoping to get a tax deduction.

The IRS requires a receipt for the donated equipment from the nonprofit organization you donated it too.
