Assistive Technology Programs
Across the US, Assistive Technology Programs are implemented on a statewide basis to provide increased access to assistive technology equipment for individuals with disabilities, and for the elderly.
Most states have organized their programs with regional centers providing a number of services to the communities they serve.
The centers which run the AT programs will generally have –
- demonstrations of different types of AT technologies and equipment
- run training in the use of the equipment
- have loan closets of AT equipment, which will include many items of durable medical equipment
The services may not be limited to those listed above, but should include them.
The New York Assistive Technology Program
The New York state Assistive Technology Program is called TRAID –
Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Program.
Website – https://www.justicecenter.ny.gov/traid-program
Unfortunately, TRAID no longer has an online equipment exchange where you can donate equipment on a person-to-person basis.
Your only option is to donate gently used durable medical equipment directly to TRAID at your regional TRAID center.
Below is a list of the TRAID Regional Centers and their contact information.

Medical equipment reuse, refurbishing and recycling programs and organizations in New York State
The following are organizations which accept donations of gently used durable medical equipment for “reuse”, and redistribute it to those in need in New York, either for free or at very low prices.
Some reuse centers will only take gently used equipment which does not require any fixing or refurbishing, and will then redistribute it for free to their community. In this sense, all of the TRAID Centers which I listed above are also reuse centers.
Independent Living Centers for the disabled will also take equipment and redistribute to the individuals in their care and into the community via their loan closets.
I have listed the Independent Living Centers of New York State in the section following Reuse Centers, and you can find all their information there.
Some “reuse” centers will charge low prices for their equipment because they are generally having to refurbish and to sanitize the items, and have to pay for this. These are generally nonprofit organizations.
An example of this would be Wonderful Wheelchairs, who have a staff of volunteers, but have to pay for the spare parts etc. for refurbishing the wheelchairs, walkers and scooters and so have to charge very low rates for the refurbished items.
TRAID Centers
As I explained in the last section on the New York Assistive Technology Program TRAID, you can donate equipment and it will be given to those in need and “reused”. The equipment in these cases that is donated will have to be in good condition.
To find a TRAID REGIONAL CENTER near, just refer back to the list above, or use this link to the list of regional centers on their website.
