Where To Donate Used Medical Equipment In New York State: The Complete Guide

by

If you or your loved one, no longer need some of your items of  home durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, bedside commodes, canes and even hospital beds, you can really help individuals in need on lower incomes by donating the equipment.

In New York State you can donate used medical equipment  to –

  • the New York Assistive Technology Program – TRAID centers
  • medical equipment reuse, refurbishing and recycling
  • New York Independent Living Centers
  • Goodwill stores
  • Salvation Army stores
  • Thrift Stores
  • Rotary Clubs
  • Lions Clubs
  • loan closets for durable medical equipment
  • Nursing Homes
  • Veterans Centers
  • Senior Centers
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars
  • American Legion
  • International Humanitarian organizations
  • on craigslist
  • on usedHME
  • on Freecycle
  • on Facebook

I have put together a comprehensive guide of all the organizations that I can find in New York State to which you can donate used medical equipment, complete with addresses, phone numbers and drop off information.

Where the information is available I have listed the types of equipment donations which are preferred.

I would suggest using the links in the table of contents below to skip to the section you wish to use.

There are literally hundreds of different places you can donate to listed in this article.

The section and Thrift Stores and the section on Loan Closets have their own indexes to help you find a location near you more easily.

Assistive Technology Programs

Across the US Assistive Technology Programs are implemented on a statewide basis to provide increased access to assistive technology equipment for individuals with disabilities, and for the elderly.

Most states have organized their programs with regional centers providing a number of services to the communities they serve.

The centers which run the AT programs will generally have –

  • demonstrations of different types of AT technologies and equipment
  • run training in the use of the equipment
  • have loan closets of AT equipment, which will include many items of durable medical equipment

The services may not be limited to those listed above, but should include them.

The New York Assistive Technology Program

The New York state Assistive Technology Program is called TRAID –

Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Program.

Website – https://www.justicecenter.ny.gov/traid-program

Unfortunately TRAID no longer has an online equipment exchange where you can donate equipment on a person-to-person basis.

Your only option is to donate gently used durable medical equipment directly to TRAID at your regional TRAID center.

Below is a list of the TRAID Regional Centers and their contact information.

Medical equipment reuse, refurbishing and recycling programs and organizations in New York State

The following are organizations which accept donations of gently used durable medical equipment for “reuse”, and redistribute it to those in need in New York, either for free or at very low prices.

Some reuse centers will only take gently used equipment which does not require any fixing or refurbishing, and will then redistribute it for free to their community. In this sense, all of the TRAID Centers which I listed above are also reuse centers.

Independent Living Centers for the disabled will also take equipment and redistribute to the individuals in their care and into the community via their loan closets.

I have listed the Independent Living Centers of New York State in the section following Reuse Centers, and you can find all their information there.

Some “reuse” centers will charge low prices for their equipment because they are generally having to refurbish and to sanitize the items, and have to pay for this. These are generally nonprofit organizations.

An example of this would be Wonderful Wheelchairs, who have a staff of volunteers, but have to pay for the spare parts etc for refurbishing the wheelchairs , walkers and scooters and so have to charge very low rates for the refurbished items.

TRAID Centers

As I explained in the last section on the New York Assistive Technology Program TRAID, you can donate equipment and it will be given to those in need and “reused”. The equipment in these cases that is donated will have to be in good condition.

To find a TRAID REGIONAL CENTER near, just refer back to the list above, or use this link to the list of regional centers on their website.

Goodwill Of The Finger Lakes

Durable medical equipment is not on the list of rejected items, so you should be good to go, but make sure your donations are in good condition.

The donations page for Rochester is on their website here – https://www.goodwillfingerlakes.org/stores/locations/region/rochester

I must say it is a little odd, as the website says you can donate to all stores, but then shows you a map with drop off locations and stores, so you will have to find what suits you, and give a call.

There are 9 drop-off sites, and 11 stores, all listed with phone numbers, so just give a call.

The donations page for Syracuse is here on their website  – https://www.goodwillfingerlakes.org/stores/locations/region/syracuse

There are 3 drop off locations and 2 stores, they are each listed with their address and phone number, so again give them a call to make sure that what you have is something that they want – also they may not be taking certain items all the time due to the amount of storage space available to them.

Donating used medical equipment to thrift stores in New York State

Many thrift stores will be happy to take donations of used medical equipment if it is in relatively good condition.

Don’t forget though, if you are looking to claim your donation as a tax deduction, then you will need to donate to a thrift store which is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit, as you can only claim if you are donating to a nonprofit, or charitable, organization.

Below is a very long list of the thrift stores that I could find that accept donations of used medical equipment in New York State.

Just pick a town on the list below near you and it will go directly to the thrift stores in that town.

  1. Meeting Location – I have just entered Buffalo, NY, USA
  2. Club Type – Select “Rotary Club”

– just as I have done in the image below.

Step 3/

Once you click on the “search” button you’ll get a list of all the Rotary Clubs in the Buffalo area will appear on the right of the search tool, as shown in the image below.

Step/ 4

You should get a lot of clubs.

Now click on a club name in blue, which is indicated in the image below with the red arrows.

You will open a page with all the available information on the club you chose.

You can see the example below, with all the contacts, locations etc for that particular Rotary Club, and now you can just give them a call to find out if they are looking for gently used medical equipment, or if they know of another club which may be looking for donations.

Donating used medical equipment to Lions Clubs in New York State

Lions clubs, just like Rotary clubs do much charitable work, and if you have gone through the loan closet section of this article, you will have noticed that there are quite a few clubs with loan closets in NYC that I have found.

If you want to find a Lions club in your area to donate medical equipment to, and there isn’t one in my list of loan closets, you could try locating clubs in your area, and giving them a call.

To locate a Lions club you will need to use their locator tool which you will find here.

You will come to the page in the image below.

Step 1

Simply type in the Zip code in which you wish to find Lions clubs, as I have done in the image below, select one of the areas in that zip code on the dropdown list, and you will then hit the “Search” button.

Step 2

The results will come up, and you will have the choice of either the a map view, or a list view.

If you choose the map view it will look like the image below.

Map View Step 1

The blue icons may be circular and have a number which indicates how may clubs there are in that area, so you need to keep zooming in on the map (using the “+” or “-” buttons in the bottom right hand corner of the map) , until the icons in the area you want separate out into non-circular blue pointer icons without numbers, indicating one club at the location, as in the images below.

If you are not looking in a large city you will probably just get the pointy icons straight away.

Map View Step 2

Click on the icon at the location that interests you and you will see an image like the one below with some club details.

Map View Step 3

If you click on “Lions Club” at the top of the club graphic, or on the word “View” on the bottom left of the graphic, you will come to the page below.

You will then need to click on “contact club”  on the right hand side of  the graphic.

You can then send them a message using the form which comes up.

There is no telephone number, it is all done by email.

If you did not click on the word “View” but instead on the word “Contact” on the graphic,

you will open an email contact form, as in the image below.

List View Step 1

If you choose to use List View instead of  Map View to locate a club, you will see the page open the list of clubs as in the image below.

Just scroll through the list of clubs until you find what you are looking for.

By the way, the list view does throw up some very odd results – I kept getting three pages of results from Sri Lanka in the middle of my clubs in Manhattan !

List View Step 2

When you find the location and a club that you want to contact, you have the three choices to get to the club info as before –

  • click on the title at the top
  • click on View
  • click on Contact

as in the image below, and you will get the same club pages and contact form as I indicated above.

Donating used medical equipment to Senior Centers in New York State

Lots of senior centers will also be very grateful to receive donations of gently used durable medical equipment, either for use at the center, or to add to a loan closet, should they have one.

An example of senior centers which do accept equipment donations are the centers run by JASA – Jewish Association for Services for the Aged.

JASA has 22 senior centers across New York City to which you can donate, but due to Covid 19 you will need to go to their website and submit a form.

The main JASA Phone number: 212 273 5359

You can find the donation form page here on their websitehttps://jasa.org/in-kind-donations

Donating used medical equipment on Craigslist

You can also use craigslist, to donate an item of used medical equipment for free.

You will need to decide whether, or not, you want to make the donation a “pick up only”, deliver it yourself or ship it.

With Craigslist you will be able “create a posting” for a local area, so you can make it available for just for people in that area, making it easy for you to deliver it to somewhere near to you, or have the person you giving it to meet you somewhere.

Two points here though –

1) As you probably don’t know the person you are donating your item to, you may not want them coming to your home. So, I would charge for shipping, or if the person is local to where you live, you can arrange a meet with them somewhere or deliver it to their home.

2) You will want to create a throwaway email address just for this listing. This is to avoid your regular private email from getting inundated with spam.

Here are some sites with classified listings on which you can donate medical equipment –

  • Craigslist
  • Ebay
  • Freecycle
  • UsedHME.com

How to post a donation in your local area on Craigslist

Step 1/

Type into the your search engine “craigslist + your local city, and state”, and as you see below, as I typed in “craigslist Buffalo NY”.

Step 2/

You will next arrive on the page below.

In the top left hand corner under “craigslist” click on “create a posting”, which I indicated in red.

Step 3/

The next screen you come to will ask you to select the type of posting you want – you want to choose “for sale by owner”, and to then press continue.

Step 4/

After that, you have to pick a category from a long list – in our case we need to choose the category “free stuff”,  as you are donating your equipment, and then you need to press continue once more.

Step 5/

Now we have come to the point where you write your posting.

You have a number of options for contact details – but do not give out your telephone or address.

Use a “throwaway” email just for this posting, rather than your main private email – this is to avoid getting loads of spam emails.

After you have written the posting, you follow the process adding photos of your equipment, and lastly agreeing to the terms and conditions.

Craigslist will also send you the usual verification emails making sure that the email address you gave is really yours etc.

Donating used medical equipment on UsedHME.com

On the website “Used Home Medical Equipment” you can use the free listing service to buy sell or donate used medical equipment.

This free service works by zip code –  those people near to your zip code will see your advertisement.

Just remember when listing your donation not to give your normal private email, and to create a new one just for this.

 Step 1/

To post your donation on the website, you go here –

http://usedhme.com

Step 2/

Start by selecting the primary menu navigation button – ” List/Sell Equipment”

Step 3/

That will take you to this page, where you will fill out your contact info

Step 4/

Select the state where you are donating the equipment and the zip code.

Step 5/

You can donate your equipment in one of two ways  –

  • the equipment is sold and the money from the sale is donated to a charity of your choice, or
  • you donate your used medical equipment to someone

Below in the image you can see that I have selected “Donate” highlighted in blue in the Ad type selection box, and directly below it is the option for “Free”.

You will need to select one of these two options.

Both options are for free listings on the site.

Next select from the drop-down “Select type of Equipment” menu the type of equipment you are donating, and enter an asking price along with the details of the model and condition of your item – this example is for selling the equipment and donating the money .

In the second image below, you will see that I have selected wheelchair and entered 150$ as the asking price.

You can then submit your ad and after the sale the money will go to the charity you have chosen.

To donate the medical equipment directly to another person

You must select “Free” in the text field “Ad Type“, and not donate.

Following that, you select your type of equipment from the equipment menu and give an “Asking Price” of “0$”.

Add your item model number, age and condition into the details field.

I have done it in the image below.

This ad will work like any other listing – if someone is interested in your donation, they will contact you directly, and you will then organize everything with that person.

The website does not get involved with the delivery or pickup of any equipment.

Step 7/

Once you hit “Submit Ad“, and it’s done ! Just like with a newspaper ad you will be contacted when there is a customer.

What about photos ?

You may be wondering where you can add photos of your donation – You can’t.

Because the advertised listing is free, there is no opportunity to add a photo.

If you really want to have an image you can use their paid services.

Donating used medical equipment with freecycle.org in New York State

Freecycle.org is

“The Freecycle Network (TFN, or Freecycle) is a private, nonprofit organization registered in Arizona ….. TFN coordinates a worldwide network of “gifting” groups to divert reusable goods from landfills.”

I took this directly from Wikepedia.org, as it says it all.

You can visit the sight, find a group in your area, join the group, and then gift whatever you would like, keeping it circulation for others to reuse.

Step 1

To find a group near you in New York State you need to go to this page on the freecycle website –

https://www.freecycle.org/find-towns

You will come to the page shown below, and either type in the name of the town you want, or click on the map view and choose a town from there which has a group.

Step 2

Until recently you could browse through groups, and see what they had available  etc, but now you have to become a member.

So in both the “list view” and the “map view”, once you have found the group in your area that you want to join, you have to click on the big green “join” button.

You will then be asked to either –

  • login, if you are a member already of freecycle

or to

  • sign up if you are not a member

Step 3

Now that you have “signed up” you will see that your membership of the group is pending approval.

Once your  membership of the group has been approved you can post the equipment that you wish to give away.

You will see that members can post what they are offering and also can put up posts for what the want.

You can join as many of the groups as you wish.

How to donate used medical equipment in New York State on Facebook

With a Facebook account, you can join local (you can choose from groups close, or far) Selling Groups and use the Facebook Marketplace.

All kinds of categories of items are sold and donated in the groups.

To find and join selling groups you have to –

1. Sign into Facebook, or create an account if you don’t have one – it’s free

2. Click on the group icon in the main Navigation Menu at the top of the page, or the in the left hand sidebar menu –  the result is the same

3. Next, go to the “Discover” menu tab in the left sidebar menu and click on it – I have indicated where it is below

This will take you to a page like the one below, which will be populated with groups in your area, so you need to find the ones which are for buying and selling.

4. You now want to find the categories carousel shown below, which you also see at the bottom of the image above and click on “buy and sell” – it is in between the rows of groups.

This takes you to the page full of groups of people buying and selling in your area.

5. Join as many as you want – the more you join the greater your chance of finding someone for your used medical equipment donation.

You will have to wait for the groups to approve your memberships.

Once you are a member of some groups you can then use the Facebook “Marketplace”.

6. The “Marketplace” is accessible either from the main nav bar menu – the nav button right next to the groups nav button -,  or from the sidebar menu on your “Homepage” as in the images below.

The Marketplace page will bring together all the items that people are selling from all the groups you joined and display them there – see below.

You can filter the items by in quite a few ways including –

  • sales within a certain distance (goes up to 500 km)
  • by selling group
  • and….

You will see the category for “free stuff”, and your donations will be listed here, as well as in the timeline of your group page.

You can of course also view your groups one by one, if you just go to the “Groups” menu tab in the main menu and then click on the individual groups on the left of the page in the list “Groups you’ve joined”.

Doing this will bring up individual group pages and their time line with the different postings, just like on your own timeline page – as you can see below.

You can post your donation in two ways –

  • post it on the Marketplace – facebook instructions here https://www.facebook.com/help/561376580709359
  • post it on ian individual group timeline – you just go to your group and in the main menu you will see the menu tabs “Buy and Sell” and “Your Items”, both of which will take you to “Sell Something”

Just list your item for 0$ and it will be shown in the “Free Stuff” category.

If you are a member of multiple selling groups, and you want your donation to show in all, then use the Marketplace, and your donation will be posted to all of your selling groups.

Where to donate used medical equipment near me

As well as using online selling groups to donate used medical equipment, try some of the following agencies and administrations in your neighborhood –

  • Your local Area Agency on Aging
  • Social services office
  • Local church communities

  • Private clinics
  • Look up the local Retirement Homes in the yellow pages and give them a call

Tax deductions on donations

If you are donating your used medical equipment to a registered charity, keep the receipt if you are hoping to get a tax deduction.

The IRS requires a receipt for the donated equipment from the nonprofit organiztion you donated it too.
