In this article, you will often see the term “assistive technology devices” used .

The term refers to devices which enable an individual to accomplish a task that they could not otherwise accomplish, without that device.

The devices can be high-tech or low-tech.

Pretty much all durable medical equipment is considered a form of assistive technology device.

Used medical equipment from Ability Tools, the State Assistive Technology Program

In California, the State Assistive Technology Program is “ABILITY TOOLS”.

Ability Tools’ mission is to increase public access to “assistive technology devices”.

To accomplish a large part of their mission, Ability Tools contract with a coalition of Reuse Centers – The California Assistive Technology Reuse Coalition (CATRC).

The CATRC  play the major role in the collection and refurbishment of used medical equipment for Ability Tools, and then with the Ability Tools’  and their combined database, they re-distribute equipment to those in need.

ABILITY TOOLS and the  CATRC offer opportunities, to those who qualify, the possibility of –

  • short term loans of durable medical equipment for free
  • longer term loans of durable medical equipment for free
  • indefinite term loans of durable medical equipment for free
  • being given durable medical equipment for free
  • buying refurbished durable medical equipment at a very low cost

The Ability Tools AT Exchange

Participating CATRC organizations post their inventories of used medical equipment and AT devices, on the Ability Tools’ online Assistive Technology Exchange, where anyone, including the public, can see what is available.

You can take a look at the Assistive Technology Exchange website is here – http://abilitytools.org/services/at-exchange-transition.php

If you want to learn more about the AT Exchange, you can see that in my article “Free Medical Equipment In California: How And Where To Get It”, where you will find a section on how to use the Ability Tools AT Exchange to see what equipment is available.

Goodwill stores selling used medical equipment in Los Angeles

First, it is important to say that not all Goodwill thrift stores will sell used medical equipment, but many do.

Secondly, any used medical equipment which is sold by a Goodwill thrift store is sold “as is”, and has not been either sanitized, or refurbished in any way. This means that if it breaks, or you have an accident using it, you have no recourse.

So, check used medical equipment thoroughly before you buy it.

Goodwill donation stores locations in Southern California

You can locate any stores near you in the Los Angeles area, with the Goodwill Southern California Organization website locator, here –

https://www.goodwillsocal.org/donation-center-locator/

Salvation Army stores also sell used medical equipment in Los Angeles

Just like Goodwill thrift stores, not all Salvation Army stores sell used durable medical equipment, so check before you go.

And if they do, they also do not sanitize, or refurbish, the equipment that they are donated in any way, but sell it “as is”. So, once again, you will have no recourse if it is faulty.

You can go to their website page below to use their store locator tool to find a store near you –

How to find used medical equipment for sale, or free, online near me in Los Angeles

Finding used durable equipment near you on online platforms is not difficult at all, but be careful, as you don’t know the person you are getting the equipment from, and what condition the equipment is in.

How to find used medical equipment for sale, or free, near me in Los Angeles, on OfferUp

OfferUp was created as an app and website dedicated to making it simpler to off-load items you no longer want.

Buying used medical equipment near me in Los Angeles, on eBay

You can also use eBay to find used medical equipment near where you live in Los Angeles – sadly, there is no free stuff on eBay !

To see how to set eBay to local searches for used medical equipment near you, you can take a look at my illustrated guide – “How To Find And Buy Used Medical Equipment Near Me On eBay ?”

Do remember that when buying from thrift stores, or online listings, there is no guarantee that the equipment is safe, and you are buying these used items at your own risk.

By comparison, typically when you buy used medical equipment from a reuse center, the equipment has been sanitized and refurbished within certain guidelines, and checked for safety.

Take care to properly check items when you are buying used medical equipment, if it is being sold “as is”.
